Hands-on classes where kids make real things
Felt, plant dyes, star lanterns, spinning and weaving. Every Heritage Oak class pairs a story with real materials and the science behind them, for ages 6 to 11 in Davis, California.

Get class datesHow a class unfolds
Each class runs about two hours and follows the same rhythm, so children know what comes next and can settle into the work.
A story
We begin with a story that sets the scene: a sheep’s long journey to a coat, or a lantern on a winter night.
A close look
Kids investigate the material like scientists: magnifiers, simple tests, and their own predictions.
The making
Hands get busy with real wool, plants, paper and thread. Everyone finishes something they made themselves.
Home again
Each child goes home with their project and a small card that explains the science, to share at dinner.
The classes
Five Saturday classes and a winter break camp. Each one stands on its own, so children can join any of them.
A course for parents, coming soon
Story, Rhythm and Hand teaches you to bring this way of learning home: telling stories, keeping a gentle weekly rhythm, simple drawing, handwork and the Field Book.
It’s filmed as hands-on video, so you watch the materials and the work up close. Learn at your own pace, with a printable workbook and one thing to try with your child each week.
